"SO, YOU WANNA BE A WRITER?" WITH KAYA COCOE
When writing isn't what you are really doing...
At least, that is the master plan.
What if I told you that you could be anything but a writer? How would you feel? For the reality is you are not some label. When you publish, you are not some "author." These are titles we give ourselves maybe for notoriety or possibly because it sounds like a flair. The notions of living up to it, now that is the problem.
That is why you won't write.
Thinking of how to fill in the gaps, the shoes of the ones set before you is...stifling. It is also a de-motivator. I know for sure that I am not the next "big" thing, why? Well, then comes the next big thing and so on. It is a never-ending, can't quite get right--cycle.
The way we should look at writing shouldn't be in the lenses of who came before us but rather what did God call you to?
When you think about all the times you sat before a blank screen or page, did you ever think you would heal someone? Testify of God's goodness, mercy, or love? Did you think that your story would create a ripple-effect so inviting that you build relationships that turn into lasting friendships? No? You just wrote. Right?
The power of words is transcribed with authenticity and then some.
Words have the power to change if only you give them a chance. Writing isn't for the weak at heart, mostly those who feel and are called to produce works that affect. Don't believe me?
Think back to your childhood favorite? That in itself leaves some impression, does it not?
Stories are just the beginning, words are the medium, and the calling of God is the foundation. Being a faith-based writer is work that consists of knowing that you are the instrument that God plays skillfully. You are in the Master's hand, who created and thus, we only can go so far--so we, too, create.
However, it is how you create that will leave an impact. You can start small, sure. You can go grand, great. Though, someone will read your works and ponder after it or it is purged into an afterthought...either way, you leave something behind.
So, what will you leave behind? What effect will startle the stiffness of the indifferent? or curious? Will you make an impact so small it becomes a problem? I won't let a moments procrastination take me for a fool and not let myself scream out words that keep me company. One would go in cycles and then circles.
You are not that automatic but rather purposed for greatness.
Let that sink in...
All the way to the bottom.
